If you follow a number of cocktail/liquor type people on Twitter or their blogs, you may have already seen it. If you haven’t, I think you should.
One of the most useful guides I’ve found to Scotch whiskys is one with them all on a chart by smokey, peaty, etc. I hadn’t looked for one like that for American whiskeys, but this chart is almost as good. And then we got a pitch that made me want to talk about it…
There was a small bit of dirt and a single hair on the wall of my bathroom, forming what appeared to be a frowny face. I turned the hair upside down and now it’s a smiley face. That made me smile, then I washed my hands, walked into the kitchen, and started taking care of the dishes and prepping food for dinner with a beer by my side.
For some reason, that seemed like such a random but accurate snippet of life with depression. Just a trigger warning: I’m going to talk about some dark things under the cut, and so keep in mind that topics such as drinking (duh), depression, and suicide will be talked about frankly. (And this is another occasion where I’ll be glad that comments aren’t working.)
So, if you know any of us, you know we like amaro.
A couple of years ago, I made bathtub gin (basically) for Marshall for a present. Now, thanks to the Washington Post’s Carrie Allan (who is awesome) and Fiola’s Jeff Faile (who is also awesome), we have a recipe for homemade amaro.
I’d say: give us your recipes in the comments, but they ain’t working. Instead, tweet them to Scofflaws Den’s Twitter account. If I give anybody presents this Christmas (sigh, I will, I GUESS), it might be homemade amaro. I just need to get off my ass.
And I’d love to see what you like in yours. Maybe you’ll get a bottle of mine…
Later this week, I’ll post some drink ideas that don’t involve simple syrup (diabeetus, after all) and are based off my favorite video game. Until then, just keep thinking about me while you sleep.
