A Scofflaw Contest

Hopefully, wherever you are, spring has arrived or is close to showing up. Here in the DC area, we’re still getting some chilly nights and rainy days but hopefully that will pass before too long. But with Spring right around the corner, I decided to have a little contest.

When people think about what spirits evoke that springtime feeling, for the most part gin, pisco, cachaca, rum and even (gasp) vodka seem to jump to mind. Of course, there is nothing wrong with turning to these wonderful spirits (except vodka) when the sun starts shining, the air warms up and the trees and flowers begin to bloom. However, I think just because summer is right around the corner, good ole whiskey should not be relegated to the back of the liquor cabinet. After all, bourbon takes center stage in May during the Kentucky Derby!

I was also looking at the calendar and realized that April is the 18th month of Scofflaw’s Den (actually, it may be the 19th, but stick with me here . . . .)  Eighteen got me thinking of Prohibition. Prohibition got me thinking about the Templeton Rye that I recently reviewed and my homemade “Marshall’s Mountain Moonshine Bitters” (post forthcoming because I’m lazy.)  So what, you may be asking, does this train-of-thought have to do with Spring?  Nothing.  I’m using this as an excuse to find some good cocktails and give away some tasty stuff to you folks.

The What

Submit a recipe for an original spring cocktail with a base of rye whiskey and a photo of said cocktail by April 20th.

The Who

You, knucklehead. (Except for Sean – sorry, Co-Scofflaws are not eligible.)

The How

1.  Create your cocktail and snap a photo of said cocktail.
2.  Email me (Marshall@Scofflawsden.com) your recipe and photo.  Only one entry per person!
3.  Leave a comment to this post that you have submitted a cocktail.
4.  Polls close at 12:00AM April 20th, i.e. the stroke of mid-night April 19th.

Out of all the submissions, I (and maybe Sean if he wants to help) will pick the top three cocktails based on taste, presentation (partly where your picture comes in) and adherence to the spring-time theme.

The What

And now what you’ve been waiting to see, the prizes.

Third Place:  Will have his or her cocktail featured on Scofflaw’s Den in a Contest Results post, including the photo submitted with the recipe.

Second Place: Same as third place and a 50ml bottle of “Marshall’s Mountain Moonshine Bitters.”

First Place: Same as third place and a 100ml bottle of “Marshall’s Mountain Moonshine Bitters” and your very own bottle of Templeton Rye.

There you have it folks.  If you have any specific questions, feel free to drop me an email and I’ll get you an answer ASAP.

Cheers!
